In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, rapidly growing, industrializing, and diversifying Chicago was a prime example of urban change and an important foundation—context and laboratory—for the developing fields of sociology and social work. The work of the early “Chicago School” gave rise to important fields of both inquiry and social action.
A century later, Chicago and other cities are again experiencing significant changes that invite us to review the nature and importance of community in urban life and to reassess how we think about strategic intervention to address social problems within the urban landscape. Grounded in the work of the School of Social Service Administration’s forebears and Chicago School scholarship, this seminar will explore contemporary issues concerning community, community action, and community change.
